Microsoft Flight

Flight News Updates Jul 19 - Community Update

Greetings fellow aviators. I am one of the new community coordinators at Microsoft Studios supporting Flight and Flight Simulator X. I've logged a handful of hours on many of Microsoft's flight simulator games over the past few decades and happy to be back in the cockpit of what is perhaps the longest running PC franchise of all time. I'm eager to learn what I can from the veteran pilots and ready to support the dedicated fans of the series.

May all your skies be clear and your landings smooth.

Hi, I was just wondering what Microsoft Studios' plans are for the future of flight simulation games. Are you guys planning to make FS11?

Please reply.

espero que consideren la posibilidad de un nuevo flight simulator :D

HI! I love FSX and I wish you would develop a new FS. There are things to consider while doing it though... default ATC needs alot of work(so you are vectored realisticly and above all, more options, so you can declare an emergancy and things...), navdata updates, easy to use addon installation interface, better weather generation(and real star constellations mabe), much better flight planner, more animals or even people here and there.

These are just some things I think would make flight simulator experiance much better.

Flight Failed because of changes in the way Microsoft tried to cut out all of the support from the community and start a new type of simulation.  The community didn't buy the change and left it to fail.  Changes that abrupt will always fail within a dedicated community where the developer doesn't listen and tries to force their views on the community.  We want an updated version of FSX that fits with the way Flight Simulator has developed within the Flight Simulation community over the years and holds onto the core we all hold dear and with improvements we all expected in the next generation of the product.  Some of us have grown with the Flight Simulator Product from the days of BAO and didn't appreciate the abrupt injection of Flight as a replacement.  Just my thoughts after using Flight Simulator for over a third of my lifetime.  I am now 75, Thanks for your attention..... Hello USN Saint, nice to meet you! This is coming from an avid 13 year old FSX player. (Yes, you read me correctly, 13 YEARS OLD, I'M A KID). Anyways, when Microsoft Flight came out, many loyal followers felt extremely alienated when they played this game. Most of the gameplay mechanics were extremely unrealistic. We felt very betrayed because have grown accustomed to the realism that previous versions of it offered. Also we absolutely despised the poor aircraft selection(NO JETS! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING). One other thing that got us hot under the collar, was the money sucking scheme that Microsoft had implemented when they released this game. On top of that, we only had Alaska and Hawaii. This was a far cry from what it used to be, the ENTIRE world. Of course, you following the series for such a long time,I hope you share some of our gripes. The flight simulator community has been betrayed by this game.

I have put in point form what your first matters of business should be

- Ask and plead Microsoft to rehire ACES as soon as possible. If anyone knows how to make a flight game, it's them

- Respond to community blog posts, it gives us hope that someday, there will be FS11

- Share our pain and suffering, it's hard to get the plug pulled after 30 years of PC aviation

It's so good to have somebody who is a true PC Pilot. Most of the other people who managed Microsoft Flight didn't have a clue about FSX or the games that preceded it.

Have fun flying and don't stop believing that someday, there will be Microsoft Flight Simulator 11.Thanks for joining the community!

July 20, 2013 12:08 AM

Again, thank you for joining us, together, the whole Flight Simulator community, we can get Microsoft to rehire ACES and make Microsoft Flight Simulator 11 and Train Simulator 2.

@flightkitty - I'll reply but unfortunately I can't really answer your question. My role as the community coordinator is to support the existing games - Flight and Flight Simulator X. The future of the franchise is a mystery but it's certainly withstood the test of time.

@d4n13l t0c1n0 - Gracias. Me encantaría ver un nuevo juego también.

@ConstantinIV - Hi. Glad to hear you love FSX. We always appreciate feedback and those are certainly some great ideas.

@fisheye1938 - Well, as a fellow gamer and the new community coordinator for the series, I applaud your devotion and passion to the series. That's quite impressive. Microsoft's goal with Flight was to create an experience appealing to a wider audience. I don't have to tell you the learning curve for flight simulators can be steep and Flight aimed to land somewhere in the middle. Of course many seasoned flight sim gamers weren't as happy with the changes, but Flight still did well with those who wanted to fly but struggled learning how to take off and didn't feel like logging hours just to learn how. I appreciate your perspective and hope to chat more in the future - I'm sure you have some stories you could share.

@SmarmyAbyss1 - Hello and nice to meet you too. I am impressed with your passion for the game and your articulate response. Most community coordinators are gamers just like you who support existing titles. We don't always know the fate or future of the franchise but try to help out however we can with what we have available now. I can't promise the community will always like the news we share or the direction the series takes, but I can tell you my job is to support the community, so I will respond as often as I can and provide content I hope you all find entertaining. The community is lucky to have someone with your personality and I look forward to hearing more from you.

USN Saint........A member of VFC-13 perhaps?  Many moons ago I was in VFA-125.  I am an avid user of FS going all the way back to FS1 on a trs-80.  I am still pretty much an fs9 guy, but I break out the FSX when I want to go someplace that isnt well supported in FS9.  Its good to see that the community isnt being totally abandoned.  I thought Flight was a good idea but I would of rather payed for all my content upfront with a larger scenery area and more aircraft.  I agree with fisheye in that MS just didnt listen to the community and then tried to cut out the community development.  Anyway good to see you post and I look forward to whats in store.

July 20, 2013 3:27 AM

great to have a new communtiy manager, welcome!

Maybe you can forward our thoughts to the persons who decide what happens to MSFS in the future.

I use MSFS since the 80`s periodically and since FS2004 i play it very often and intense. MSFlight is the only FS that i use at the moment. It has some advantages over FSX but is lacking so much things. But FSX i can`t use anymore- it is so ugly and buggy, except you install add-on`s worth some hundred bucks.

My opinion is that some manager decided to go casual with MSFS, so they sold ESP to LM to make a Sim while MS decided to make more "arcade style". But as we all know this failed. There are a lot people out there using FS, but they are divided into FS9,FSX,P3D,Flight,X-Plane and some other products. So somebody has to unite all of them again. This can be done with a new FS. Contrary to the most people i would not prefer backwards compability. There is need for a brand new engine with all the advantages of new technologies. In order to not disappoint the hardcore simmers you need to make the next FS looking ànd behaving better than FSX with the best add-ons. Of course get in touch with the community what they really want before release. :P

Welcome to FSx community and flight.

A lot of FSx user is struggling to get their FSX working on Windows 8, as fsx is it way too old for Win 8. t Microsoft developers must create like patch for fsx users who use  windows 8 to get rid of all the errors they get when FSX starts up . Because a well all know, Fsx pay-ware planes gets more realistic by each day and a 4 -2 year old PC cannot handle so realistic planes anymore. Look at PMDG new B777 that coming out soon (It better). Flight simmers must buy new pc to be able to have a smooth flight with the B777. And we all know that all the new computer that you buy have Windows 8 on it.. That is one of the big things I know that Microsoft have to fix for us.

Microsoft must also create a patch for fsx user so that fsx runs on more than one core as FSX requires a lot of processing.  Microsoft said that SP2 and acceleration will fix it , but let’s be honest that didn't happened.

Thank you

Welcome, USN Saint - glad to have a sim-pilot aboard! I'll add the news to my website, asap. I too, have been a sim-flight fan for decades. I play Flight on a near-daily basis. The detail is outstanding. I'm still finding new and interesting things in the graphics.

The planes are more than adequate for casual flying. However, many of us would like a helicopter added to the game - and a jet or two. Could be a Lear and an F-35 for example.

More countries would be nice. A significant number of players want everything for free - that is simply not realistic. Adults should know that - kids, not so much. I have no problem paying a little extra to have the "good stuff" - I realize that it costs more to produce it.

With all that said, you have a task ahead of you - keeping all members of the Flight Community happy at the same time may be an impossible task - but worth the effort you will (I'm sure) put into it.

Welcome aboard USN Saint, and Clear Skies!

Happy to have another pilot onboard this little and we all hope very long adventure :) I hope you'll have good time with the gaming community here.

Welcome aboard USN Saint ! Happy landings !

If you don't mind watching this, this is a video describing how the community felt when the January 4th press release came out about MS Flight in a humorous but truthful way.

PS: Have you asked Microsoft about rehiring ACES studios? If you can't, just strike up a conversation about it with your colleagues.

July 20, 2013 6:52 PM

Oh, I forgot to mention word of mouth works fairly well when it comes to asking Microsoft to rehire ACES. I would also like to tell you that the people who were on the ACES team came together and formed Cascade Game Foundry

@JackRyan162 - Hi Sean, unfortunately my gamertag wasn't inspired by anything as glorious as being part of a fighter squadron, but I am retired Navy. You were part of VFA-125, the Rough Raiders? That's very cool. There aren't many of us around who remember the TRS-80, that's back a few years. For a series that hasn't seen any new releases for a few years, the community is still quite active. You can find fans of the series still posting mods and making YouTube videos. As far as Flight - Microsoft tried something out of the ordinary with the franchise in an effort to appeal to a broader audience and many gamers were satisfied with the result - but many of the hardcore sim fans were not. We can't really change what's been done, but going forward my goal is to support the community with what we have available today and have fun doing it. Thanks for the comment and hope to see you around in the future.

@RF HEIMDALL - Thanks. I have and will continue to share the community's feedback with the rest of the team. Sounds like you have quite the history with the Flight Simulator games, and it's unfortunate you're experiencing problems with FSX. I'm not sure if you have reported any of your technical difficulties in the past, but if you haven't you might consider doing it to see if the support team can help. I can't really comment about the future of the series because I don't have that information - I only support the existing games available today.

@mac donalds11 - Hi and thanks for the feedback on Windows 8. The support team has been investigating some compatibility issues with Windows 8 and 8.1 Preview, so I will definitely pass this information along. I can't guarantee they will patch the issues you have mentioned, but my job is to at least make sure they know what the community is experiencing.

@TheOldCoot41 - Hello and thank you Coot. Great website and appreciate the mention and link to the MS Flight website. It's also great to hear your experiences with Flight have been enjoyable. You have some great screenshots I'll have to add to our recently created Pinterest board. I do have a task ahead, and while I don't know that I'll keep everybody happy, I'll certainly give it my best effort. Look forward to chatting more in the future. Clear Skies to you as well.

@DreadMetis - Thanks for the warm welcome. I've been supporting various gaming communities for quite awhile and eager to see what I can do here. Fans of the Flight Simulator series are a passionate bunch and I expect it'll be a great time. Happy landings to you too.

SmarmyAbyss1 - Hah, I am a bit nervous to watch this video. Just remember I support the existing games - Flight and Flight Simulator X and don't really have anything to do with the future of the franchise.

July 21, 2013 11:18 AM

Welcome aboard! Any support for Microsoft Flight or FSX is greatly appreciated. Does this mean we're going to see a cockpit for the lovely  C-46?!? :)

@Kaloyanic - Slick video. You probably won't see a new cockpit, but hopefully you'll see plenty of blogs and posts from me, heh heh.

@Ffarl50ace - Sounds good. I'll make every effort to join the next one. Thanks for the invite!

July 22, 2013 3:47 AM

USN Saint:

First, I want to say that it's very cool to see that there is still some sort of liaison between MS and the world regarding the FSX/MS Flight software packages.

I have a thought that regarding FSX and, although I imagine you won't have the answer, I hope you will ask someone about them or, at least pass it along.

I truly believe that what the FSX community wants more than anything else is simply an update.   Do you think that anyone at MS has considered tasking 1 or a few coders with the task of creating an update for FSX to bring it into the "modern era"?   I don't care how it's packaged...expansion or Service Pack ....but it would be great to just have the software updated so that it would feel native on Windows 7 and make use of multiple processors.    Even just this little bit would be easily worth paying for....

I'm not as much of an expert on the software as others; however, I'm sure we could easily find you a community person that has tweaked FSX to the point of being about as good as it can get.   They would be an excellent resource on what needs to happen to take FSX to the next level.

The great thing about FSX is that the community isn't screaming for more content.  We have a lot of 3rd party developers creating plenty of content.   We just want it to run more smoothly, make use of multiple processors, and "feel" like a native Windows 7 application (I think that making it a native Windows 8 application is asking too much.)

Finally, I want to state that although it would be beautiful to have FSX run in DX11, I have a feeling that would be a massive undertaking.  Frankly, I feel that DX9 is just just needs to be optimized for modern systems and the (fairly) modern operating system.

Anyway, I think that MS could easily make a profit on a small project such as the one I suggested.  I'm sure that, if it were well reviewed, pretty much every FSX owner would upgrade, even if it had a modest cost.

And, one final thought:   With a little work, FSX could be put on Steam!   I think that a fully functioning, up-to-date version of FSX ...even with no additional features (other than the modernization and bug fixes) ...I think you could easily charge $30 for FSX Deluxe+Acceleration.     And, that's not bad for an old game!

USN Saint
July 22, 2013 12:46 PM

@Aelorean – Thanks for the comment, feedback and suggestions. Microsoft is extremely proud of the history and accomplishments associated with the Flight Simulator brand and continues to invest in supporting it and the devoted fans who continue playing it. Clearly you’re one of those fans and we always appreciate witnessing that kind of passion. Happy Flying.

July 22, 2013 9:06 PM

@USN Saint - First of all, it is great to see a community-facing representative for Microsoft Studios, as I think we can all agree, the company has been rather quiet lately with regards to FSX and Flight.

If there was an update I would like to see for FSX currently, it would be that Microsoft either pay for the Gamespy compatibility (which admittedly is fairly extortionate since the company got took over), or move to a new multiplayer system. Whilst I understand that it is still perfectly possible to play multiplayer via direct connect, I feel that the ability to centrally log in and see everyone's sessions was a real asset to the community.

But yes, I agree with others above. Due to the fact that FSX has been the most recent version of FS for so many years now, there is a huge collection of addons for the platform, and a new major release could cause a whole range of incompatibilities. It might even be beneficial that if any updates were released, they were small fixes/improvements to the existing FSX.

July 22, 2013 11:44 PM

Guys, i remember the the previous representatives from MS said that further development on FSX and Flight has stopped. There will be no evolution. If you want to stick with FSX or enhanced FSX(P3D) you have to take it as it is- or wait for P3D v2. It looks that it is more likely to get an all new FS than to receive updates of exisitng MSFS. But this may take several years. For Flight they said they had some content in the pipeline which is not ready to be released because it`s unfinished and no one works on it anymore and in addition for licence reasons.

July 23, 2013 1:00 AM

@RF Heimdall:   Things change.   There are a lot of companies making a LOT of money on Steam by resurrecting old titles that have been dead for years.  FSX isn't even dead -- imagine what MS could do with it.   With regard to P3D, it's a great product; however, for it to actually take the place of FSX Microsoft would have to allow them to change the license so that it would be "OK" for it to be used for entertainment as well as professional/training use.  (I'm assuming the reason LM is so adamant about it not being used for entertainment is due to a licensing issue with Microsoft..but I could be wrong about that, of course.)    MS Flight was DOA.  It didn't have what it took to get 'casual' users interested to the level to pay the bills ...and it wasn't good enough for those that rely on the reality/addons/etc. of FSX.   I think I could have enjoyed MS Flight on occasion; however, if you want the truth, I would have liked it better if they would have just updated FSX to have the same features that MS Flight has

@USN Saint:   Please make sure the devs see this:    The Oculus Rift is looking to be the first viable VR solution for gaming and someone was able to get it working with FSX.    I'm sure they could talk their bosses into letting them order a $300 Rift development kit to try it out :)

USN Saint
July 23, 2013 1:40 AM

@Pricetx - Thanks for the comment and feedback. While I might engage the community as often as I can, the truth is there has always been a team maintaining the game. There's a lot that goes into it, especially after the game is a few years old and not fully supported like when it's released.

@RF HEIMDALL - Hi Heimdall, you make a great point and remind us to look at what's already been released. When Microsoft publishes news like that, the community coordinators are often the ones who interface with the fans. It's not always pleasant but it is part of the job. And regardless of whether that happens, I still plan on having fun flying and interacting with the community.

@Aelorean - Ah, the Oculus Rift does look amazing, and wow! Someone got it working with FSX, that is very cool. As far as making sure the devs see it, it doesn't quite work like that. But I'll definitely talk about it with the community team. Thanks for sharing.

July 23, 2013 12:54 PM

Glad to see that Microsoft is still interested in the FS franchise.

I agree with most of the opinions on why Microsoft Flight failed so there is no reason to repeat them here.

What I thought Flight should have been is the easy introduction to an updated and upgraded FSX engine.  That would have met the needs of  the novice, seasoned FSX flyer and the freeware and payware developers in one fell swoop.  It would again have brought the FS9 and FSX dedicated players under one umbrella.  Sadly your management did not see this.  Hopefully, someone will see this in the near future.  I am in my late 60s and don't have another ten years for your management to listen to the community.

All the best in developing a WORTHY successor/update to FSX in the NEAR future.

July 23, 2013 1:02 PM

Hey USN Saint, it's me again! Did you watch the video I sent you? Anyways, about the subject of resurrecting ACES studios. I would like to inform that it's not too late to save the flight simulator franchise. You have enormous power in your hands to influence Microsoft to rehire them and resume work on Flight Simulator 11. Many people are happy with the addons that are offered from third party developers but also many people find it extremely costly to buy high quality addons (including myself). With the community support, you and your colleagues, can resurrect the series. Because the way things are going, the community feels like FSX is the final true installment in the series. We cannot say goodbye to 30 years of PC aviation. Remember, FSX was released in 2006 and Acceleration in 2007. Surprisingly, that was six years ago. We cannot say goodbye. Given your position, you have enormous power to convince Microsoft to rehire ACES studios. And with the help of the community, that might as well just happen. I understand this is not your responsibility, although, what happens in the two years determines whether the series lives on or whether it dies off. Please send e-mails to Microsoft about ACES, do community pollls, anything. The fate of the series rests in you and your colleagues' hands.  This is a message just not to you, but to all Flight Simulator fans out there. Send angry e-mails to Microsoft, organize petitions, do anything. We can't let our beloved Flight Simulator die like this.

July 23, 2013 1:42 PM

July 23, 2013 2:21 PM

It's good to hear that the MSFS francise hasn't been completely abandoned... I hope that there are plans for a REAL FS11, with full third party support, because we all know it would fail without PMDG, Aerosoft, ORBX, Flight 1, and many others :)

Looking forward to your updates.

July 23, 2013 5:49 PM

@FirstOtter - Hello and thanks for the feedback. It's always nice to hear from the fans, especially when they share a little bit about themselves.

@SmarmyAbyss1 - I did watch the video...reluctantly. Of course I can't comment on it though. If you get enough signatures on that petition of yours, I'm sure it will get the right level attention at Microsoft! And I'll mention it at tomorrow's staff meeting, just because I think it's kind of cool.

@NATHAN3219 - Hi Nathan, I don't think Microsoft could ever abandon a game with such historical significance. Thanks for the comment.

July 23, 2013 6:53 PM

Two words, "tiled resources" that tech demo at BUILD was amazing.

July 23, 2013 9:09 PM

Great to hear about a new community coordinator!   It sounds like you are a fellow flight simmer who knows a lot about the franchise.   I have been a long time user since fs2002 and I recently used flight with all dlc everything purchased.....and come to think of it it's not terrible.   I mean if microsoft had given this a chance then maybe eventually they would have listened to our requests and we could of saved the franchise.   But time will only tell if we can all as a community reboot the flight simulator franchise.

July 24, 2013 11:23 AM

7 years ago, Microsoft released Flight Simulator 10, what would be the final installment in the series. In 2009, Microsoft laid off ACES studios, thus, work on Flight Simulator 11 was cancelled. Many fans of the series cried out in agony as their favorite flight simulator was thrown in the garbage. Although a successor to Flight Simulator X came out last year, it alienated many of the fans that came to love the series. Soon, work on that was also cancelled after six months. Since it followed a DLC model, you would be given 2 planes and the big island of Hawaii. If you wanted anything more you would have to buy it, of course, this didn't sell as planned. This series, that dates back all the way to 1982, has been forgotten by Microsoft. Think about it, this series has been around before COD, Sonic, heck even Mario, were made. The community for this game is still alive and healthy, but, it is at risk of slowly dying off because of no recent installments. ACES and the Flight Simulator series deserve to be resurrected from the grave. 30 years of PC aviation should not suffer a fate like this.

Support the cause, sign the petition

July 24, 2013 6:48 PM

Welcome to the wonderful world of Microsoft virtual aviation USN Saint! Looking forward to many good times with you and hopefully the rest of the Flight team remaining. I've come to accept the fact that Microsoft is done with flight sims, but I always try to remain optimistic in the hopes that one day something will turn up. I'm not holding my breath though.

I'm a consistent attender of Ffarl50ace's group flights and am hoping to see you there this week.

Till then, happy landings, and see you in the skies!

USN Saint
July 24, 2013 6:57 PM

@darth3pio - Hi. Only two words, eh? Well hopefully you'll chat more in the future.

@alexboeing144 - I am a fellow flight simmer and I do know about the franchise, but I'm certainly no expert pilot. I'm not nearly coordinated enough. Probably why I only play sims and don't do it in real life. Ah, but that's a story for some other time. I enjoy Flight. It's a beautiful game. But again, I'm more of a recreational flyer and not someone who is looking to turn knobs and push buttons.

@SmarmyAbyss1 - Microsoft certainly hasn't forgotten about the Flight Simulator brand and still invests resources into supporting the existing products. And that is an interesting petition which I did mention at this morning's staff meeting. Who knows, maybe you'll get thousands of signatures and get some attention. I'll be watching.

@ThePandanator22 - Thanks for the warm welcome. I am going to make every effort to join the group flight. Looking forward to it. Clear skies and smooth landings.

July 24, 2013 6:59 PM

Guys now it's just F50ACE, so it should be easy to remember. Check this out!

July 24, 2013 9:56 PM

Hi USN Saint,

Great to see someone from Microsoft's Flight Simulators, interfacing directly with the Community again.

Are you able to comment on the two following questions ?

(1)  FSX Service Patch.

While FS11 is probably only a dream for many,  and would require considerable resources, what is the possibility of a SERVICE PATCH  for FSX, to address the issues with Operating Systems  that were released after FSX.  ie  Windows 7, and Windows 8.

There are many who will not update from XP, because of FSX's issues with Windows 7, and even more so with Window 8.

(2) The FSX & FS9 Weather Server.

This service seems to go up and down quite often  -- but thankfully it was brought back online with weather updates a few days ago, after over 2 months of  the weather not updating .     ( During that downtime, calls to MS Tech support seemed to be ineffective, and none of the support staff were even aware of the service,  or could determine its status)

(a) Is there any reason to expect this service will be terminated in the near future ?

(b) If it remains in operation, and it stops updating,  would informing you, be of any help in getting the service to start updating again ?

July 25, 2013 12:41 AM

I'm also glad to see MS taking an interest again in FSX and the huge community of flight sim enthusiast.  I have been using MS flight simulator since FS2000 and it is a very engaging and addictive experience.

I would love to see MS continue to build on FSX.
